Clay Modelling

“Clay can be dirt in the wrong hands, but it is an art in the right hands”.

Humans have been making various objects such as pots, sculptures, plates, bowls etc. out of clay for ages. Modelling clay has found such uses due to its non-drying attributes. Clay modelling is the creation of three-dimensional art pieces typically using any type of clay - Plastilina (oil-based clay), ceramic clay etc. Clay modelling enables us to express our emotions physically.

In clay modelling, lumps of clay are made into coiled shapes and then are converted into desired shapes and designs on the plank of any wooden surface. The basic technique used in clay modelling is hand building, which involves making any form of an object by hand with the use of clay and simple tools.

Clay modelling finds an important application in the automobile industry. It has been at the forefront of automotive design for decades. Most Virtual Reality (VR) tools and softwares are now readily available to car designers. However, every major automaker company, from Audi to Mercedes to Tesla, uses this traditional method (clay modelling) to create a mould of the vehicle in clay before it ever hits the road.

Clay modelling nurtures creativity, boosts imagination and promotes self-confidence. It also facilitates important competencies and life skills such as planning, constructing shapes, problem-solving, coordination, evaluation, concentration, decision-making and many more. This activity is therapeutically beneficial as it improves fine motor skills in an individual.

As clay modelling works on the fundamental aspects of play-based learning, it enhances active learning in an individual.
